Paragliding is filght in it’s simplest form. Like an eagle, you will soar high above the earth using only the winds as your source of power.

A Paraglider is a simple wing that uses “lift” to fly just the same as a bird uses the wind to fly. It is easy and safe to learn and requires no power source unlike other conventional aircraft. You can literally stay in the air for hours soaring like an eagle until you decide you’ve had enough!

If you desire for adventure is in the skies and you want to soar like the birds then there is a great company in Bali that can fulfil your lust for thrills. Exofly has been operating in Bali for the last 14 years and has an excellent reputation.

If you have never imbibed in paragliding before and are a tad concerned then Exofly will ease those worries. As their website explains ‘Experience is not necessary as our highly professional and well experienced instructors can take you on a tandem flight leaving you free to enjoy the captivating scenery of coral reefs and green lagoon waters below.’

They even devote special places of worship for her and dedicate a special day for her each month called ‘Hari Bhatari Sri’, which falls on the ‘Sukra Umanis’ Fridays of each month of the Balinese calendar (this month it falls on Friday 17th).

The history of agriculture started since ancient times as humans sought after a better living subsequent to nomadic hunting and gathering. They decided to stay put in an area that deemed to provide sustenance, and started to tend lands and harvest.

Rice perhaps is not the first plant they familiarized with, yet it is this single plant that has now become the staple diet among the societies across the archipelago, including Bali.

Food and nourishment are fundamental necessities, thus agriculture is in a very important position as it is depended upon by many people. A successful harvest becomes a determinant for the life sustainability of the surrounding societies.

Balinese societies believe that a great force aides them in achieving good harvests. As though they believe that it is such power that created the rice stalk for their lives. And that great power is manifest in Dewi Sri the goddess of rice and fertility. Dewi Sri is embodied in the culture and prevails through the generations.

Miguel Covarrubias, an anthropologist, once stayed in Bali and wrote the impressive book, Island of Bali, which explains Bali comprehensively . Through the book he also tells of the legend of the origins of rice in Bali. It goes that in the beginning the Balinese only knew sugar canes. Dewa (’god’) Wisnu, known as the affectionate and protecting god, wanted to create a better food for his human subjects. His marriage with Sang Hyang Pertiwi or Mother Earth gave birth to the rice which took over as the staple food. God Indra then taught the humans how to sow rice and harvest.

This legend holds a very deep meaning. This is not indispensable from the local genius of the Balinese who never forget to devote and make use of symbols to express their spiritual dedications.

God Wisnu is personified as water, while Pertiwi is earth. Fertility and prosperity will only happen if the two unite harmoniously. If Pertiwi is present without Wisnu, then there would be drought. If Wisnu were to be present alone then there would be floods. Both would spell an unsuccessful harvest.

Dewi Sri is personified as rice emerges through the blend between water and earth. Afterwards another interpretation of the symbolism emerged that Dewi Sri was the consort of Dewa Wisnu and Wisnu can only carry out his duties as protector with Dewi Sri by his side. Logically, life would only exist on earth if there was fertility.

Dewi Sri fills a significant position in Bali. Bali is agrarian. Even up until now when tourism sweeps and spreads rapidly in Bali, according to the statistical data on land usage – most is for agricultural. Half of the demography also deals in the agricultural sector.

The Balinese worship Dewi Sri as a motherly figure. At home there are always flower offerings placed at the rice barn or rice container. Farmers worship her by erecting small shrines amidst their green rice terraces. Traditional irrigational organizations in Bali known as Subak also have a dedicated temple for Dewi Sri known as the Pura Subak.

In the rice fields, Dewi Sri also referred to as Nini Pantun or Dewi Padi or Ibu Padi. We can observe Nini Pantun through the Ngusaba Nini ceremony – a ceremony for celebrating harvests. This ceremony is also meant as to “carry” the spirit of Dewi Sri towards the rice barn or lumbung.

Farmers make a Nini Pantun from two ties of rice stalks. These two represent the two general opposites in nature – male and female, north and south, positive and negative. The principle is that prosperity is only achieved once two elements are combined. The two ties are bound together on a length of wood which is stuck into a cleft near the primary irrigational channel. Then after, the harvest commences.

In this ritual besides making offerings, farmers also make decorations that symbolize Dewi Sri, namely the Cili. Cili are made of lontar or palmyra palm leaves and is shaped in the form of a female figure.

The word Cili probably evolved from the word Cilik that means small or petite. The ever expanding creative process has made way to the Cili in forms of Chinese coins or forms of traditional hard flour cakes. Cili not only can be used for ceremonies connected to rice but also other ceremonies including the manusa yadnya or human rites such as weddings. Lately Cili has been used for decorations and has become somewhat an icon for Bali.

Dewi Sri not only is worshipped in her function as the goddess of rice but also prosperity. Merchants in the traditional markets worship her by the name Dewi Melanting. Another version of legend tells of Dewi Melanting being the daughter of the goddess of rice and fertility.

Tales of the goddess are actually not only confined to Bali but also can be found in other places. Dewi Sri is the symbol of worship among agrarian societies.

In Java, there are many versions of the tales of Dewi Sri. Among them is a story that tells of her being the daughter of Bhatara Guru. She is frequently connected to the field snake.

The traditional Javanese have a special place in their homes for Dewi Sri meant to endow prosperity which is decorated with field snake carvings. In agrarian societies, snakes that enter the house compound are not shooed away as it is believed to signify an impending successful harvest, instead it is given offerings. No wonder, as field snakes prey on rodents, the farmer’s biggest nemesis.

There are also tales that Dewi Sri is the daughter of a king who sacrificed himself in order to save his people from drought. The exact place he committed the sacrifice grew the plant as we know now – the rice. The princess is highly revered until present time and is referred to as Dewi Sri.

Hinduism and strong traditions perpetuate her worship among the main deities of the Balinese. It is no mere tale passed down through generations but an obligation that must be lived by the Balinese Hindus.

One of the simplest forms of devotion is when parents always teach their children to not waste rice by eating up the whole plate. Besides being a way appreciation to Dewi Sri, it is a sign of gratitude and appreciation to the farmers who have become the mediums for the subsistence of the people.

We start from the south and take a look at the significant temples, the coastline, and a Catholic church in the village of Palasari.

Start off our journey this time to the west of the island. Most overland journeys going to the neighboring island of Java, the regency of Banyuwangi to be precise, would travel through this region. Yet you do not need to hop between the islands to look for a hoard of highlights to explore, as the region itself is dotted with abundant historical sites to see.

Embarking from Bali’s south you would cross the regency borders of Badung and Tabanan and travel along the main road for around two to three hours until you reach a stopover, a spiritual stopover that is. But before reaching the stopover, head out to the west’s own site to surf - the rolling waves and the beaches of Medewi.

PANTAI MEDEWI
Pantai Medewi, or Medewi Beach is often considered the ‘Kuta’ of the Jembrana regency. So if you do get bored of the crowded waves in the south, head to the northwest. Medewi is great fun for surfing due to its long curling waves, plus it is a scenic sunset vantage point. It has now become a favorite alternative for surfers, and several accommodation facilities are available nearby. And on the culinary side, there are restaurants that cater to international taste buds there too.

RAMBUT SIWI
This temple, referred to in veneration as ‘Pura Luhur Rambut Siwi,’ is located in the village of Yeh Embang at Mendoyo in the Jembrana regency and celebrates its Pawukon calendar-based anniversary of Umanis Perangkabat on June 17.

According to knowledgeable local elders, Rambut Siwi is closely related to the legend of high priest Dang Hyang Nirartha while on his way from the Majapahit kingdom in East Java to Bali circa 1489. When he entered the temple grounds, he took a strand of his hair and placed it at the temple as an offering and as a curing talisman, as there was a plague in a nearby village. Ever since, it has been referred to by its current name, rambut meaning ‘hair’ and Siwi meaning ‘worship.’

Rambut Siwi is a scenic stopover, surrounded by terraces of rice fields and a cliff with crashing waves beneath. Nearby there are resting spots that enable weary drivers to take a break and enjoy the view. It is also a spiritual stopover for the Balinese Hindus who continue their journey to the west, where they can pray for a safe travels north and further westward.

PANTAI CANDIKUSUMA
Candikusuma Beach is about 12 km to the west of the capital city of Jembrana, named Negara. Candikusuma often is the sporting site for Jukung sailboat contests each August 17 for the Indonesian Independence Day celebration.

PALASARI
In the village of Palasari stands a majestic Catholic Church that has also become a symbol of religious tolerance. The commune was initiated by Father Simon Buis, SVD in 1940.

Further northwest and around the tip of Gilimanuk, where the crossing to East Java’s Ketapang harbor takes place, enjoy the diving and snorkeling playgrounds of Menjangan Island. And just near the bay lies a site of Bali’s own Romeo & Juliet.

PURA GEDE PERANCAK
This prominent Hindu sea temple is located in Perancak, and also commemorates the site of Dang Hyang Nirartha’s arrival in Bali in 1546. Continuing up the road from Rambut Siwi, one follows a signpost just before Delodberawah where a crocodile statue (among the icons of the Jembrana regency) stands in the middle of the road. Another icon of the place - bull racing - is organized here. Called Makepung in the local tongue, these bull races were initially competitions among farmers, where a pair of highly decorated bulls pull their masters on cikar chariots. The muddy rice field race courses are up to 4 km long. The races are now an annual affair with two major events - the Governor’s Cup and the Regent’s Cup, and usually take place at a dedicated circuit on Dlodberawah beach. Jegog bamboo orchestras and dancing are always featured during the races. According to the regency’s Cultural and Tourism Government Office, the racing calendar for this year will include events on July 5 and 19, August 2, 16 and 30, September 13 and 27, October 11 and November 1 - considerably a lot of time to plan ahead…

PURA JAYAPRANA
In the bay of Teluk Terima there is the eternal love story of Jayaprana and Layonsari, Bali’s own Romeo & Juliet. The story goes that the King of Kalianget was smitten by Layonsari’s beauty and wanted to kill her lover by inviting him on a hunting trip into the thick West Bali Jungle. At Teluk Terima, Jayaprana was murdered by one of the king’s guards. Upon hearing about the death of her lover, Layonsari thrust a keris dagger into her own heart.

High on a small hill overlooking the bay is the burial grounds of the two lovers, which was later developed into a temple site. Golden yellow cloths adorn their graves as worshippers from all around come in reverence and remembrance of their strong love.

PATHS TO DISCOVER
Pura Luhur Sari Teluk Trima is the first temple you come across on the Gilimanuk to Singaraja route. Then Pura Menjangan, Pura Pulaki and Pura Pabean follow after. A staircase rises towards a densely shaded and grey macaque inhabited temple ground. Just across from this site are two other significant temples, Pura Pabean and Pura Agung Pulaki.

The island’s west is dotted with numerous highlights. Might as well take your time and discover them all.

What better way to explore the cooler climes of this tropical island than from your favourite saddle! Day trips, weekends or 2 week tours are all on the agenda. The tours include full vehicular back up where possible and are aimed at anybody with off road mountain bikeexperience. The void between heading into the Balinese hills on your own bike, never to be seen again, and following a train of day-trippers freewheel downhill to the next cold towel stop has recently been filled. Over the past four years a small mountain biking outfit, Bali Trail Blazers, has been developing trails across the island’s mountainous heart, aimed at the more serious off-road biker who doesn’t mind the odd calf-swelling ascent or two.

With its extensive network of farmers’ tracks and motorbike paths weaving up through the island’s volcanic peaks, Bali is excellent mountain bike terrain. Away from the humid heat of the lowlands, the air is fresher and cooler allowing for a furious climb or two up a grassy knoll without the impending cardiac arrest.

The opportunity to create some bone-charring trails across Bali was recognised by British geologist Clare Price in 2005. While spending four years working in the oil business in Jakarta, Price was introduced to the wonders of volcano biking on weekends at the nearby Sentul Selatan in the mountains of West Java. Designed to be flexible to riders’ requirements but also offering a choice of established rides, ranging from day-trips to 14-day safaris, Bali Trail Blazers is aimed mainly at small groups, with an eight rider maximum on most trails. The itineraries cater to different skill and difficulty levels depending on the riders’ pre-tour brief. The company offers ten hard-tail 27-speed bikes but bikers are welcome to bring their own if they feel more comfortable on their own saddle.
